WELCOME TO HORTON and BROADWAY
This leaflet has been prepared on behalf of the Parish Churches of Horton and Broadway to give you an introduction to the area and help you settle into your new home.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Horton was part of a tything of Ilminster called Ilminster Without until 1982 when it became a civil parish. The Ecclesiastical parish was formed in 1994 although St Peter’s Church was built in 1900.
Broadway is an ancient Ecclesiastical parish with the Church of St Aldhelm and St Eadburga half a mile from the village.
The whole area was originally in the Royal Forest of Neroche. Historical information for Broadway is available in the church. Many facilities are shared between Horton and Broadway and, to a lesser extent, with neighbouring Donyatt and Ashill.
Horton and Broadway are in the Yeovil Parliamentary Constituency and David Laws is MP.
Somerset County Council has offices in the county town of Taunton.
South Somerset District Council has its main offices in Yeovil, an area office in Chard [62392], and a local office in Ilminster [52292] with limited opening hours. SERVICES
Domestic Refuse collection – Thursdays (Fortnightly). ** Wheeled Bins need to be put on the roadside in the morning.
Recycling (Black boxes) & Food Waste (Brown food waste bin) collections –Thursdays (Weekly)** for paper, food & drink cans, foil, glass, clothes and shoes.. **(The day may be different in some areas. One day later after Bank Holidays)
Bulky items and garden waste – Waste Disposal Centre, Beeching Close, Chard, which is well signed on the East side of A358 on the northern outskirts of Chard.
Recycling banks – Car Parks in Ilminster - West Street & for plastic bottles Shrudrick Lane. Car Parks in Chard – Tescos and Essex Close and the Waste Disposal Centre, Beeching Close, Chard. Full recycling facilities are not available at all centres.
Water and Drainage – Wessex Water [0845 6004600]
Electricity – EDF Energy [0800 365000] and Power Gen [0800 363363] are two of many suppliers.
Natural Gas is not available in either parish.

URGENCY SERVICES
Dial 999 in an emergency. The police and ambulance stations in Ilminster are not always manned but the police are always available on 0845 567000. Major accidents are dealt with at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton [01823 333444]. Minor injuries may be treated at the surgeries [see below] or at Chard Hospital [63175].
DOCTORS AND DENTISTS
Medical practices –Summervale Medical Centre [52354] and North Street Surgery [52284] in Ilminster, and Church View, Broadway, behind Broadway Village Hall [55300].
Dentists - Ile Dental Centre [52480] in Ilminster. There are other practices in Chard including the Chard Dental Practice [01460 67022] which is known to take NHS patients.
NHS Direct [0845 4647] has nurses available for advice at all times.
VETERINARY SERVICES
Minster Veterinary Surgery [52847], Oakapple Surgery [54541] in Ilminster and in Chard the Glynswood Centre [66111].
EDUCATION
Most local children start at Neroche County Primary School in Broadway. Secondary Schools are in Chard & Crewkerne and there are Public Schools in Taunton and Wellington.
For the pre-school child in term time there is a Play Group in Broadway Village Hall [Nicola Smith 07717 831092], and Parent and Toddlers at St Peter’s Church Room, Horton [Tania 07901670012].
There are two children’s playgrounds, one adjacent to Neroche School, access via the lane along side the west side of the school and the other in Channels Lane, Horton.
SHOPS and OTHER TRADERS
Sub Post Office in Goose Lane, Horton, closed on Wednesday (Post Office only) and Saturday afternoons, also sells groceries, newspapers etc.

Public Houses - The Bell in Broadway & the Five Dials, Horton
Mobile library stops in many places Thursdays every 3 weeks. The full list and times can be obtained from the library in Ilminster [52695].
There are good local shopping centres in Ilminster and Chard and many larger stores in Taunton. Some of the Ilminster traders will deliver.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Trains – Taunton [11 miles] main line to Paddington, the South West and the North – Axminster [13 miles], Crewkerne [10 miles] and Yeovil Junction [17 miles] are on the Waterloo-Exeter line.
Buses – First Group & Stagecoach provide a limited service between Axminster/Chard and Taunton and some of these buses stop in the villages. Bus timetables - opposite the War Memorial in Broadway and the bus shelter in Goose Lane, Horton above the Post Office. More routes stop in Ilminster, including Berry coaches to London and there are services to many places from Taunton
Taxis – Angel Taxis [55987] and Allo Allo [55255 or 07712 805700] operate from Ilminster.

The Parish News, published monthly, covers the seven parishes that form part of the Anglican Ilminster & District Team Ministry and gives details of many clubs and organisations. Copies are available in churches [45p] or delivered to subscribers £5 for year.
Local events are reported in the Chard and Ilminster News and other local papers. Notice boards: Horton - Bus Shelter, Goose Lane and Horton Village Hall. Broadway Parish Council boards - opposite the Rectory & by the Post boxes opposite the War Memorial & outside Hilltop Salon.
